Founded in 1977, Southern Maryland Hospital Center (SMHC) is a 275-bed full-service hospital that serves patients from Washington, D.C. and Southern Maryland.
In addition to state-of-the-art patient services, which includes emergency angioplasty, SMHC is a Maryland-designated stroke center. Full-time, in-house Intensivist, Hospitalist, Obstetrician, Pediatrician and Anesthesiologist coverage is also available.
The Emergency Department at SMHC features a 35-bed main ED with a separate Fast Track area staffed by physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The hospital treats more than 63,000 emergency patients a year.

The National Children’s Museum is scheduled to open at National Harbor in 2013.
